Abstract The principle of participation is considered one of the key principles of international environmental law and plays an important role in participatory democracy in this field. It is one of the solutions to compensate for the shortcomings of international law, especially regarding the participation of all actors such as citizens and non-governmental organizations. The Rio Declaration, Agenda 21, and the Aarhus Convention, more than other documents, emphasize participatory democracy and the strengthening of the role of major social groups in the realization of objectives, policies, and executive methods concerning the environment. The realization of this principle requires the existence of components such as the right of access to environmental information, public participation in the policy-making and decision-making process, and access to and recourse to administrative and judicial authorities. In this research, while examining the vital role of this principle in international environmental law, we will analyze the aforementioned components.
